Elton John on Lady Gaga: “ARTPOP Was Not a Good Idea.”

By Hayden Wright

It wouldn’t be an Elton John interview if the Rocket Man didn’t say something indelicate about a fellow performer. The icon counts Lady Gaga among his closest friends and recently wrote music for her next album. However, in a sit-down with Apple Music Beats 1, he said her last solo effort was a mistake.

“She made some bad career decisions,” he admits. “ARTPOP was not a good idea. It was not a good album. I think she will admit that.”

Whether she will admit that is up for debate.

John did have plenty of nice things to say about the Oscar-nominated superstar as well.

“I think she’s a great writer. For me, she is Stefani Germanotta and I love her and care about her,” he clarified. “She’s the godmother to my two children. I want her to make a simple, fabulous, great song record. Maybe like [Carole King’s] Tapestry, but her version of Tapestry. I heard two of the songs. They’re not complex arrangements, but they’re great songs. It’s all about the song.”
